Touring group exhibition curated by Valeria Ceregini featuring six international artists: Shane Finan, Beata Piekarska-Daly, Mary O’Connor, Louis Haugh, Guillaume Combal and Kathy Herbert.

Over Nature offers a new optical experience, greater ecological awareness and responsibility towards landscape and environment which surround us in the beautiful and historic venue part of the OPW – Office Publics Work, Rathfarnham Castle.

The exhibition consists of a series of multimedia artworks and paintings from Shane Finan, an innovative and interactive approach from Beata Piekarska Daly to move towards painting, an abstract method of landscape representation with paintings and printings from Mary O’Connor, an in-depth analysis by videos and photographs of the botanical and environmental condition of the Irish landscapes from Louis Haugh, photographic installations and drawings from Guillaume Combal, and a multidisciplinary installation approach from Kathy Herbert. This variety of methodologies allows us to understand how our different histories and experiences position us regarding each other: who you are, where you come from, what your commitments are, what your experiences have been.

The desire of this group show is also to acknowledge and honour the significance of the relationship we have with others and how our futures as people in the world are tied together. It is an ethical imperative to see that despite our varied place-based cultures and knowledge systems, we live on this one planet together and must constantly think and act concerning those relationships.

The show will be open by Ángel Luis González, CEO – PhotoIreland Foundation at the presence of all the artists and curator.

The catalogue of the show is available at the Rathfarnham Castle or The Library Project.

Artists Tour, Enemy/Friend Talk and Screening of Dr. Strangelove.

The Fallout Pattern Series will commence at 2pm with a tour of the exhibition with the artist, curators and a/political. The tour will be followed by ‘Enemy/Friend’ a talk by a/political Director Becky Haghpanah-Shirwan and Andrei Molodkin on the ethos and vision of The Foundry and the work that has been recently produced there.

The Foundry is an experimental space located in the industrial town of Maubourguet, in the south-west of France where artists are invited to use the local factories to produce new work. Founded in 1870 by Jules Fabre, the iron foundry mobilised during the First World War to produce armaments and military equipment for the National Defence. After the war, the secluded area became a centre for Communists. Emigrating from the Fascist regimes of Franco and Mussolini, an international immigrant community developed who worked together under a shared identity and ideology.

At 4pm a screening of Dr. Stranglove will complete the series.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, is a 1964 black comedy that satirises the Cold War fears of a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. The film was directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick, stars Peter Sellers and George C. Scott.

It is a well-known tale: King Shahryar, after finding his first wife in the arms of another, murders her and her lover. Left alone, the King decides to marry a new woman eight night — only to kill her in the morning.

That is, until Scheherezade courageously marries the King and begins telling a wondrous tale each evening and continuing through until dawn — when she is supposed to be killed, except that the King always allows her to live in order to finish the next story.

In this way, she suspends her death sentence for one thousand and one nights, and slowly heals King Shahryar’s broken heart, in the process.

As part of the annual Dublin Festival of Russian Culture, the Civic is delighted to present two outstanding productions by one of Russia’s finest regional theatre companies. Both works will be presented in Russian with English surtitles.

Russian playwright and novelist Nikolai Gogol’s Marriage: An Utterly Improbable Occurrence in Two Acts, (1833) is a luminous, hilarious, absurdly poetic tale about the business of marriage. A town matchmaker and a newly betrothed busybody match their wits in a race to marry off a gun-shy suitor.

Calamity ensues and it’s anybody’s guess whether the bride will make it to the altar. Part phantasmagoria, part social comedy, part mad cap farce, this is a rare chance to see a masterpiece by one of the great Russian playwrights in an authentically Russian production.

“Nowadays it is well known that Gogol is a mystical writer, but in 1992 for many people the brave interpretation of S. Fedotov was surprising. Performance fell out the usual frames. Especially the final scene where Kochkarev fell into the earth”. Alexey Melentiev, “Zvezda-online”

TRAILER

The Irish premiere of We Don’t Know What’s Buried Here

Tina and Bernadette, are digging a hole in the ground. They dig everyday, methodically, looking for what has been hidden from them.

They are Magdalene Ghosts. They heard about Tuam on the radio. One of them is digging to find her baby’s bones, the other is digging to expose the truth. Should they keep digging? Or is it better to leave the truth under the ground, where it belongs?

After all, people who dig to find out what’s buried aren’t treated very well in this country, risking legal action, and the ruination of their good name. So why keep going?

This is a powerhouse new play by Grace Dyas about class, value and work with support from Dublin Honours Magdalene’s, Jobstown Not Guilty and Senator Lynn Ruane.

“Taking conventional notions of theatre and its audience and shoving them back in our faces, with a few expletives thrown in.” – The Irish Independent

Winter Open Exhibition is an annual exhibition of work from throughout the whole island of Ireland, chosen from an open submission call by Rua Red.

Rua Red is delighted to present the Winter Open Exhibition 2017 in Gallery 1, an annual exhibition of work by artists living in Ireland chosen from an open submission call by this year’s selection panel (Hugh McCarthy, Lorna Kavanagh, Maolíosa Boyle (Rua Red) and invited panel member, Curator Jennie Guy).

This year the panel had a difficult task selecting from an initial one hundred and seventy-seven submissions down the selected forty five artists who form this year’s Winter Open. When selecting the work the panel became aware of four particular emerging themes; the domestic/interior, portraits, the built environment and nature. These categories were utilised when installing the show so that each of the four walls are individually themed, each having their own narrative that interacts with the space.

We are delighted that this year’s exhibition spans various art forms and mediums to include sculpture, painting, mixed media, drawing, ceramics, print and photography.

We would like to remind you that our visitors also have the chance to vote for their favourite artwork. The artist will win the People’s Choice Award, a cash prize of €1000, sponsored by the Square Shopping Centre. The Voting box and slips are located at the entrance of Gallery 1.

Oscar Dempsey has created a body of new, large scale works for his first solo show as an emerging artist.

Dempsey is studying and critically researching the psychology of ‘Pride’ as a collective emotion. Why do ‘proud’ attachments to nations persist in a more globalised world? What pleasures or extremes become possible when people merge or even dissolve their identity into a collective form? Pride is an artificial sentiment, born from society which prompts each individual to attach more importance to themselves. Loss of pride can even provoke aggression and antisocial behaviour in response to ego threats.

Using the anatomy of Hyenas as a visual focal point, he takes influence from their “Dominance Hierarchy” through the intrasexual conflicts in a Matriarchal system. The works resemble limbless figures and torsos from the Roman and Renaissance period. The sculptures attempt to impersonate male nudes as they stand in antagonising positions, while being deemed weak by their dangling limbs. In this show Dempsey explores materials such as latex, styrofoam, wood and metal while utilising a time consuming, hand-carving method to create these large sculptural works.

Oscar Dempsey was the winner of the Winter Open Judge’s Choice Award 2016.

The King’s treasure has been stolen! Now it’s up to the greatest swordsmen in the land, The Three Musketeers, to get it back. But the evil Cardinal Richelieu and the Wicked Witch of the South West have other ideas. Yes, it’s the Causeway Panto and Dame Lola is back!

This year she is headed for France, in search of adventure and amour. And by the way who said that a musketeer could only be a swordsMAN? Lola will have something to say about that too!

Join us for this year’s hilarious outing with more comedy, singing and dancing than you can shake your sword at. The Causeway crew will be delighted to see all our friends again, from 4 to 94.

Cheer the goodies and boo the baddies! Laugh and point at the Daddies when Dame Lola gets them up to dance. A fun Christmas show for all the family.

There and Back Again: An Odyssey

The Odyssey is the classic of classics, the mother of all stories, the ultimate source of myths and legends full of giants, ghosts, Greeks and great adventure. Patrick Lynch returns to our festival as he launches Ulysses and his companions on a fantastic voyage which comes to life on our big screen while he plays with sand, stones, boats, bowls, fire and water But the shrewd hero manages to outwit the fates and finally gets what he wants – to go home. The use of multiple cameras will magnify onto a screen our table-top props down to the smallest detail and turn a storm-in-a-teacup into an Aegean tempest. We’ll be adapting this epic narration to bring out the fundamental fable that everyone can follow – a thrilling ride across hostile seas and spooky islands to finally realise that no matter how far you roam, there is no place like Homer.
