Tymon Park

Tymon park was created through the amalgamation and purchase of plots of farmland in the 1970s and 1980s into one large park area. Tymon Park is a 120 hectares (300 acres) Regional Park situated on both sides of the M50 motorway and located between the N81 and Greenhills Roads.

You can connect from Tymon to Dodder Valley Parks via the M50 underpass. Tymon Park was formally opened in 1986 and contains an extensive range of facilities and assets including 4 playgrounds and opportunities for active and passive recreation: The historic River Poddle traverses the park and there are stunning views of the Dublin Mountains and the greater Dublin area. It is a popular venue for events such as tournaments, band recitals, film/television shoots, family festivals in the summer, cross-country races and circus performances.

At the Willington end of the park there are two play facilities. One is a formal children’s area with standard equipment for younger children and the other, a Woodland Adventure Playground in a woodland area catering for an older teenager group. These playgrounds are situated in a natural setting adjacent to a lake and woodland.

Because Tymon serves a large residential population, a new neighbourhood playground was constructed in 2019 at the Limekiln entrance nestled into a tree grouping. A ‘mud pit’ which contains timber pig sculptures was installed as an addition to the playground. This has proved popular with the younger children as they splash around in their wellies.

The Tymon North side of the park had a new Playground constructed in 2016. This playground includes new ideas in children and teenager play, incorporating existing ideas of formal play provision and newer ideas of connecting young children and teenagers with nature. The staff of Tymon Park designed and installed an ‘Outdoor classroom nestled in a wooded area where the children and teachers can use and feel immersed in nature. This is a popular area for local schools.

Outdoor Exercise equipment was installed in 2012 on both sides of Tymon Park to cater to adult exercise needs. By the very nature of its size Tymon presents plenty of opportunities for passive recreation. Ornithologists and more casual nature enthusiasts are often seen in the park recording the diverse number of species from the resident swans with their annual offspring, the elusive kingfisher to the mighty Buzzard. The developing wildflower meadow areas are an attraction for those with an interest in the Flora of the park. While we don’t encourage picking of the flowers, we recognise that any additional interest and enthusiasm that visitors get from the diverse range of species is a positive one.

Whilst South Dublin County Council ask dog owners to keep their dogs on lead in the park, a dog run accessible from Limekiln Car Park has been provided. This encloses an area of 3700sqm and was installed after requests from dog owners who use the park. Dog training takes place at the dog run each Saturday morning.

There are two water fountains in Tymon Park, one near the Tymon Depot on Tymon Lane and the other at the Limekiln entrance. The water stations are solar powered and do not use any mains power, phones can be charged by using the USB port on the solar panel which is located around chest height. You can find real time data on total water dispensed, plastic bottles nullified / saved and even the plastic saved in weight (kg) format here.
