From the edge of the city to the airy countryside where the city dissipates into green fields and steep mountains, you’ll find a fitness challenge like no other.

Gaelforce asks you to dig deep in a test of mental and physical strength on a course of running, cycling and kayaking over either 49km or 29km.

The breakdown is a short run of 10-15km followed by a lengthy cycle on a Coillte forest gravel track, all the way to a reservoir where tandem kayaks will be waiting, before a final run to the finish line.

The shorter distances, in particular, are eminently achievable even for part-time athletes. With a mixture of disciplines, you never really know where you may shine — all you know is that you’re going to be exposed to some remarkable rural beauty as you pump your lungs full of fresh air.

It’s difficult to imagine a lovelier way to blow away the cobwebs, isn’t it?
